THE NORTH STAR

The North Star was a powerful symbol during the era of slavery in the United States. It represented hope, freedom, and guidance for enslaved individuals seeking to escape to the North and gain their liberty. The star, also known as Polaris, was used as a literal navigational tool by those traveling under the cover of night along the Underground Railroad, as it consistently pointed toward true north. Metaphorically, the North Star came to symbolize the unwavering pursuit of freedom and justice in the abolitionist movement.
